SAN RAFAEL and CONCORD, Calif. — Local clean electricity provider, MCE, is reaching an important milestone years ahead of state targets.

As of 2022, MCE’s standard 60% renewable Light Green energy service is more than 95% greenhouse gas-free – a full year earlier than planned, and 18 years ahead of California’s clean electricity target.

“We are working as fast as we can to build an electricity supply that is free of polluting fossil fuels,” said MCE Board Director Devin Murphy who also serves as Mayor of the City of Pinole. “Since launching, we’ve committed over $3 billion to the development of new regional renewables, including solar and wind, and our investments are paying dividends — not for shareholders, but for our communities and the planet.”

When launched in 2010, MCE offered twice as much renewable energy as PG&E. Since then, with MCE’s greener options and community-choice model, residents and businesses in its service area have slashed 300,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to taking nearly 67,000 gas-powered cars off the road.

MCE has accelerated efforts to reduce carbon emissions by:

MCE’s standard Light Green service is expected to reach 85% renewable energy by 2029.
