MCE’s smart EV charging app, MCE Sync, allows you to charge smarter by using the power of the sun. Take advantage of clean energy and keep dollars in your pocket by:
● Scheduling charging outside of peak hours
● Charging midday with solar power

Solar power is one of the most cost-effective renewable energy technologies available, helping Californians cut energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, solar panels only create energy when the sun is shining, so it’s important that we maximize the clean energy being produced during the day. MCE’s smart EV charging app, MCE Sync, can automatically adjust your charging schedule to use clean solar power during the day, benefiting our planet and your wallet.

The Situation with Solar

Solar panels are an easy to install, greenhouse gas-free power source, but they only generate power when the sun is shining, typically mid-morning through the afternoon. California has a lot of extra solar energy on the grid during the day when solar panels are generating and energy needs are fairly low. One way we can use this excess solar energy is by charging EVs during this time. Not only does this charge your vehicle with renewable power, but it can also:

  • Lower your cost to charge, keeping your hard-earned money in your pocket;
  • Reduce the need for polluting fossil-fuel plants; and
  • Help combat climate change!

Making the Switch with MCE Sync

The MCE Sync app uses the power of data and smart charging technology to make EV charging automatic. Simply plug in your vehicle as you normally do and the app determines the best time to charge based on when clean energy is available and the cost to charge. Power is cheaper during the day when solar is available and at night when wind energy ramps up. MCE Sync makes EV charging easy with a “set it and forget it” option that keeps your emissions down and your wallet full.

Since MCE Sync launched in 2021, EV drivers have already made major changes in their charging patterns. In fact, 20% of EV charging load has shifted outside of peak hours, which is between 4 pm and 9 pm, and into prime solar hours from 12-4 pm. Since the start of 2023, EV drivers have avoided 4.5 tons of carbon emissions by charging with MCE Sync. It would take 273 tree seedlings 10 years to sequester that much carbon!

Other Ways to Use More Solar Power

MCE Sync is just one of the ways to take advantage of more solar power! You can also use more solar at home by timing your electricity use. Get started with these tips:

  • Run major appliances like your washer, dryer, and dishwasher midday to take advantage of low-cost, clean electricity! Many appliances have built-in timers so you can schedule them in advance.
  • Pre-cool or pre-heat your home during peak solar hours, or better yet, get a smart thermostat to do it all for you.
  • Stay up to date with the power sources on California’s grid with current power supply stats from the California ISO.

By aligning electricity use with the sun’s peak hours we’re all paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future!
