SAN RAFAEL and CONCORD, Calif. — Local electricity provider, MCE, has received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a strategy for transportation electrification with local partners representing underserved communities.

MCE will collaborate with more than thirty organizations to connect with residents and organizations in Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, and Solano counties about investments in EV charging and clean mobility. Local residents will be invited to provide input about where to install EV charging and micro mobility options like car sharing, e-bikes, and scooters.

Dawn Weisz, MCE CEO

“Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in California. That’s why MCE is investing in carbon-free mobility solutions,” said Dawn Weisz, MCE’s CEO. “We want to hear from community partners about their priorities and challenges so we can better meet their needs. We can build a more equitable transportation network for all if we hear insights and guidance from community members often left out of the planning process.”

MCE will also directly contribute over $275,000, bringing the total project scope to nearly $1.3 million.

Over the next three years, this funding will help MCE and partners:

  • Conduct focus groups to engage with over 600 local residents,
  • Build 46 EV charging sites in locations benefitting underserved communities,
  • Provide EV rebates to 100 residents, and
  • Share lessons learned across industry partners to inform future transportation planning.

Since 2010, MCE has invested $1.7 million in EV charging port rebates, $1.2 million in rebates for low-income EV drivers, and installed over 1,000 new EV charging ports.
