May 20 is World Bee Day. To celebrate, MCE is highlighting its pollinator-friendly solar projects that provide clean energy and support our friendly pollinators. It’s a special day to celebrate these amazing pollinators and raise awareness about their importance in our ecosystem. But this year, we’re not just buzzing about bees — we’re also shining a light on pollinator-friendly solar farms!
Most solar projects are built on open land, often where native pollinators and local wildlife species live. Traditional construction methods disrupt natural habitats, but pollinator-friendly solar projects offer the best of both worlds — clean energy and happy habitats.
These special solar projects are designed to create a friendly environment for pollinators by planting native flowers and grasses underneath them. Not only do these plants provide food and shelter for bees, butterflies, and other important pollinators but they also help improve soil health and support biodiversity.
MCE has 8 projects with pollinator-friendly groundcover, including five local projects. At over 200 megawatts of clean power and an additional 152 megawatts of battery storage, these projects are generating enough power for over 87,000 homes each year.
