Electric vehicle (EV) charging ports are open to the public at MCE’s San Rafael office. The 10 ‘MCE Solar Charge’ stations provide 100% renewably-powered EV charging in two ways:

  • When the sun is shining, the charging stations will draw energy from the solar array.
  • Any other time, MCE’s Deep Green 100% renewable energy will supply power with a mix of 50% wind and 50% solar.

The rooftop solar system, dubbed ‘MCE Solar Charge’, was built by Marin-based American Solar Corporation, with EV stations funded by the Transportation Authority of Marin, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and MCE.

Since May 2020, MCE has offered free charging to the community to encourage EV usage. This promotion resulted in over 80,000 kilowatt-hours of charging, saving drivers an estimated $17,500 since the promotion began. Starting March 1, 2022, the stations will resume a pricing structure reflective of the costs of energy while remaining competitive in the local market. This time of use structure encourages charging during peak wind and solar production, when costs and grid emissions are lower.
