Explore the MCE local renewable energy projects supplying clean energy and family-sustaining jobs near you.

MCE customers have supported the delivery of more than 48 MW in renewable energy projects – or enough power to support roughly 20,000 homes each year! Since MCE’s inception, a portion of each customer’s rate has been reinvested in supporting local green jobs and clean energy projects. Explore some of these renewable projects.

MCE Solar One

MCE Solar One, a 10.5-megawatt solar farm in Richmond, was built on a 60-acre remediated brownfield site. The project helps eliminate 3,234 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, which is equivalent to taking more than 680 fossil fuel cars off the road each year. The project supported 341 jobs and maximized economic benefits by hiring local residents and engaging with Richmond-based contractors.

Landfill Gas-to-Energy at Redwood Landfill

Did you know that methane is 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas? Redwood Landfill is a landfill gas-to-energy plant developed in partnership with Waste Management in Novato. The state-of-the-art plant uses methane gas produced at the Redwood Landfill to power two reciprocating engines that generate electricity 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The project closes the loop on trash by turning methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, into useful electricity.

American Canyon Solar

Located on approximately 21 acres, the American Canyon Solar Project is MCE’s first Feed-In Tariff project in Napa County. The annual output from the project is estimated to generate enough clean, locally produced electricity to power approximately 1,000 homes per year.

MCE Solar Charge

MCE Solar Charge, located at MCE’s San Rafael office, is an 80-kilowatt PV solar system paired with 10 Level 2 EV charging ports that are open to the public. The project was built by a local workforce to support green career growth and maximize local economic benefits. The project generates approximately 120,000 kilowatt-hours per year, supports up to ten charging sessions at a time, and offsets usage in MCE’s adjacent office building. The EV charging stations are powered with 100% renewable energy from MCE’s Deep Green energy service.

Lake Herman Solar

MCE’s 5-megawatt Lake Herman Solar Project has almost doubled the amount of solar energy produced in Benicia from 7.8 to 12.8 megawatts. The project began providing electricity in fall 2021 and serves approximately 2,000 homes a year with 100% renewable power. The project drew 67% of labor hours from the local community, supporting the clean energy economy and creating family-sustaining jobs. The project also includes pollinator-friendly ground cover to support healthy, local ecosystems.
