FAQ
MCE’s EV charging rebate can reimburse any upfront costs not associated with CALGreen’s building code compliance. Local reach codes do not affect eligibility. Areas include non-compliance, make ready, installation, hardware, ADA, signage, striping, and networking & maintenance packages for networked Level 1 and Level 2 charging stations at workplaces and multifamily properties – not to exceed 100% of the total project costs after all incentives are accounted for.
MCE’s EV charging rebate does NOT cover any ongoing vendor fees, internal labor costs (e.g. project management), or electricity costs of utilized charging ports.
Project costs can vary widely with higher project costs due to electricity panel upgrades, farther trenching distance through concrete or asphalt, and additional ADA compliance.
Our networked Level 1 rebate offer is new and thus does not have an average project cost yet.
In addition to the rebate, MCE provides technical assistance comprised of the following services:
- EV Charger Planning Report specific to your project includes:
- Site assessment to help determine where to place your charging station including a review of ADA options
- Load study to help you understand the site’s electrical capacity, how many ports can be handled by your current electrical systems, and what upgrades may need to occur to handle your EV charging project
- Overview of additional incentives available
- Support in EV charging vendor selection
- Recommendations for operating your EV chargers post-installation, such as pricing for users
- Ongoing technical Q&A
You are still responsible for managing their own project including selecting a vendor.
All eligible Level 1 (L1) and Level 2 (L2) chargers in MCE’s EV Charging program are networked chargers. This means you’ll have the ability to set prices, collect payment, automatically send troubleshooting reports to the vendor, and more.
L1 chargers utilize a standard 120V outlet and yield around 5 miles per hour charged. L1 chargers are newly added to the program so we don’t have any data on the average total cost per L1 charger installed.
L2 chargers utilize a 240V outlet and yield around 20 miles per hour charged. The average total cost per L2 charger installed is about $6,500 per port. This figure is dependent on a number of factors, including vendor selected, size of project, electricity panel capacity, and parking layout.
The choice between L1 and L2 charging for your project depends on your site, budget, and goals. MCE and our technical assistance provider can help you figure out an EV charging project that meets your needs, as well as those you’ll provide charging to.
MCE’s Deep Green is 100% renewable energy from California solar and wind. The Deep Green premium helped to install over 1,500 electric vehicle charging ports and build renewable projects across MCE’s service area.
EVs are only as clean as the electricity that powers them. That’s why MCE encourages EV charging stations to opt up to Deep Green 100% renewable energy so that EVs can run even cleaner.
No, the charging stations do not have to be open to the public. You will decide who is able to use the chargers and when.
You can work with your charging vendor to set fee and rate structures to increase their utilization and, if desired, set discounts for certain groups to easily manage benefits. For example, an employer or multifamily property owner who wants to provide charging for staff or tenants at a free or discounted rate can create special access codes for that group while charging a different rate for the general public.
As part of MCE’s EV charging rebate, you will get a load study completed by an electrician to verify if and how many EV chargers your panel can support.
It typically takes around 8-12 months from start to completion. This includes planning, load study, budgeting, vendor selection, permitting, and installation.
Ongoing costs with EV chargers include the cost of electricity, which can be recouped by using the charger software to charge drivers, annual software network fees, and operations and maintenance (O&M). All of the qualified vendors in MCE’s EV charging program have a standard O&M warranty ranging from 1-3 years.
The owner of the EV chargers is responsible for ongoing O&M. MCE recommends that a customer have an O&M plan for at least 5 years. This can be purchased from the vendor you select, by working with another third-party, or having trained, in-house facility staff.
At this time, MCE can support this effort but cannot lead it. Top prospects for EV charging locations can be identified based on a variety of factors, including high parking utilization, available panel capacity, shorter distances between the parking spaces and panel, and available ADA spaces if it’s a public parking lot.
